Why Musical Foundations

Understand what you play.

You can learn increasingly difficult pieces while still feeling uncertain about scales, chords, or how the music fits together. Musical Foundations connects those skills through practical work at the keyboard, helping you recognize and use patterns across your repertoire.

Developed by Dr. Monique Arar, the course draws on her doctoral research into historical keyboard pedagogy.

What you’ll learn

The building blocks of confident playing.

Each pattern is demonstrated, heard, and practiced at the keyboard first; notation follows the sound.

Scales & Technique

Develop coordination through scales, arpeggios, and practical keyboard patterns.

Chords & Harmony

Learn how chords connect and hear the relationships behind the notes.

Keys & the Circle of Fifths

Understand how keys relate through sound, movement, and keyboard practice.

Musical Connections

Recognize familiar patterns and apply your understanding to the music you play.
